Promoting Nutrition Through Innovation: Fish-Based Food Training for Women

The Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy of Jubaland (MoFBE-JL), in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP), successfully conducted a one-day community workshop focused on the nutritional value of fish and the fight against childhood malnutrition.

The training brought together 40 women participants from various Jubaland Fisheries Cooperatives, aiming to build their capacity in fish value addition and promote better nutrition at the household level. This workshop is part of MoFBE-JL’s broader strategy to empower women through practical skills that contribute to improved food security and health outcomes, particularly for children.

During the interactive and hands-on sessions, participants were trained on how to prepare pasta, cake, and bread using fish as the main ingredient. These innovative recipes demonstrated how fish—a locally available, affordable, and highly nutritious resource—can be transformed into healthy and appealing meals for families.

“This training is not just about cooking—it’s about changing lives,” said Yussuf Shuvale, a representative from MoFBE-JL. “By equipping women with these skills, we are enabling them to make informed nutritional choices, diversify household diets, and even explore small-scale income opportunities through fish-based products.”

The training also highlighted the vital role of sustainable food solutions in addressing malnutrition, particularly in vulnerable communities. WFP’s support reaffirmed its commitment to nutrition, resilience-building, and women’s empowerment in Jubaland and beyond.

The event concluded with a strong call for increased community engagement and the need to roll out similar training sessions across more districts in the region.

Through impactful programs like this, MoFBE-JL and WFP continue to demonstrate how effective partnerships can create lasting change—one meal, one family, and one community at a time
