Minister of Fisheries Receives FAO Somalia Country Representative in Kismayo

The Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, His Excellency Ahmed Hassan Omar, welcomed Mr. Etienne Petershmit, the Country Representative for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Somalia, during his visit to Kismayo. This meeting took place against the backdrop of ongoing efforts to bolster the local fishing industry and improve the livelihoods of fishing communities in the region.

Mr. Etienne Petershmit’s visit to Kismayo was primarily aimed at inspecting various FAO-implemented projects that are designed to support and enhance the fishing sector. His engagement with the Ministry of Fisheries was an essential part of this visit, as it provided an opportunity to discuss the impact of these initiatives and the future direction of collaboration between the FAO and the local government.

During the meeting, the ministry showcased a comprehensive presentation detailing the completed projects, emphasizing the success stories that have emerged from these initiatives. Among the highlighted projects were the RAAISE and RECOVER Projects funded by EU and USAID respectively, both of which have had a profound impact on the fishing community in Kismayo. These projects focus on sustainable fishing practices, capacity building, and economic resilience, directly benefiting local fishermen and their families.

Minister Ahmed expressed his gratitude for Mr. Petershmit’s visit, acknowledging the vital role that FAO has played in supporting the fisheries sector. He noted that the collaboration has not only fostered development but has also empowered local communities to thrive in their fishing endeavors.

In response, Mr. Etienne Petershmit commended the ministry’s efforts and the progress made thus far. He reaffirmed FAO’s commitment to continue supporting the fisheries sector, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices and community involvement in ensuring long-term success.
