Jubaland’s Somali Fisheries Week Ignites Momentum for Sustainable Marine Development in Kismayo.

Kismayo, Jubaland State of Somalia: The Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy of Jubaland successfully hosted the Somali Fisheries Week in Kismayo, drawing high-profile delegates from government institutions, private banks, companies, and the Kismayo Fisheries Cooperatives. The event, aimed at promoting investment, fostering sustainable practices, and empowering local communities, was marked by a series of impactful activities and discussions.

Mr. Ahmed Hassan Omar, the Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy of Jubaland, played a pivotal role in organizing the event in collaboration with various stakeholders. The Somali Fisheries Week highlighted the significant potential of the fishing sector in Jubaland and underscored the importance of sustainable practices to ensure long-term growth and environmental conservation.

During his keynote address, Minister Ahmed Hassan Omar, emphasized the need for increased investment in the fisheries sector, pointing out the vast opportunities available for both local and international investors. He also stressed the importance of adopting sustainable fishing practices to protect marine resources and ensure food security for future generations. The Minister also appreciated the value-added fish that the Cooperatives displayed and urged them to share their skills and knowledge with other women and men so that our community adopts the value-added fish skills.

The event featured a range of activities, including exhibitions, visits to Fisheries Cooperative Centers, and panel discussions. Experts from the industry shared insights on the latest advancements in fishing technologies, sustainable practices, and the economic potential of the fisheries sector. These sessions provided valuable knowledge and tools for local fishermen and entrepreneurs in Jubaland to enhance their operations and contribute to the sector’s growth.

Private banks and companies talked about the support they have for  the fisheries sector and their strong commitment to fostering economic development in Jubaland through strategic investments and collaborations.

Mr. Abdirahman, Chairman of Kismayo Fisheries Cooperatives, emphasized the cooperative’s efforts to enhance livelihoods and promote sustainable fishing practices, as well as local fishermen’s contributions. He also thanked the private banks and national, international and Local Organizations for assisting them in continuing their regular operations in the fisheries sector.
