Commemoration of World Humanitarian Day in Kismayo
On August 19, 2024, Mr. Ahmed Hassan Omar, the Minister of Fisheries and the Blue Economy of Jubaland, attended a commemoration of World Humanitarian Day in Kismayo, organized by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management of Jubaland State, in collaboration with the NGO Consortium Somalia. The event recognized the vital role played by humanitarian workers and raised awareness of the challenges they face in their efforts to serve communities in need.
In his speech, Mr. Ahmed Hassan highlighted the significant risks that humanitarian staff willingly take on to assist the people of Jubaland. He noted the horrific accident that recently occurred, involving staff members from the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). While traveling over the Indian Ocean to reach an island, their boat encountered severe winds and waves that caused it to capsize. Reports indicate that several individuals suffered serious injuries, and at least one staff member is in critical condition.
In light of these events, Mr. Ahmed called on everyone to remember humanitarian workers in their prayers. He emphasized that these dedicated individuals often put their lives on the line to serve and give back to their communities. Their unwavering commitment to alleviating suffering and promoting human dignity deserves our utmost respect and support.
The commemoration served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by humanitarian workers around the world and the importance of continuing to support and uplift those who work tirelessly to improve the lives of others.
